The company began by manufacturing stepladders. However, the Great Depression forced him into a flexible business model. He turned his attention to the manufacturing of toys and created one of the most popular brands.
Christiansen was a nimble thinker and was quick to adopt new materials and technologies. In 1947, he became the first company to purchase an injection molding machine made of plastic in the world. This greatly increased the possibilities and variety of Lego products. The machine also let him test a design that would eventually become an iconic Lego brick. The bricks were hollow at the bottom and had pegs at the top. They interlocked to allow children to build intricate structures that were more complex than the ones made by wooden blocks of previous generations.
The 1950s were a time of expansion for the company. Kjeld Kirk Christiansen, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen’s daughter joined the management team and commenced modernizing the manufacturing techniques of the company. The expansion included the launch of dollhouses, furniture and Minifigures, individual figures. In 1979, the company expanded its range of products to include sets featuring rockets and astronaut minifigures. They also introduced lunar rovers, spaceships and spaceships.
In 1990, the company introduced three Model Team Sets that were designed for advanced builder. These sets introduced small parts like gears, axles, and levers, and offered a degree of realism and accuracy that was unparalleled in the Lego series at the time.
